What is Spinoza Unravelled?

Hosted by Michah Gottlieb and Clare Carlisle, the series explores Spinoza’s Ethics through close reading and discussion. We take a passage, listen to its words, and ask what they mean. We discuss different meanings, follow an argument, and make space for different interpretations.

The podcast welcomes listeners meeting philosophy for the first time and readers who have spent years with these works. No prior knowledge is required. We break down Spinoza’s writings so you can follow each idea and, most importantly, discover a new way to live.

An in-depth exploration of the Ethics.

Our ambition is to make this podcast the most in-depth resource for learning Spinoza’s philosophy through the Ethics. We work through the text line by line, taking time with every passage so that nothing is skipped. Each conversation unpacks the ideas, follows their connections and explores what they can teach us about our own lives.

Choose where to begin.

We divide the Ethics into mini-series of passages that fit naturally together. Each series explores new key themes and questions, building on the last, and ends with an overview that brings the ideas together.

You can follow the series in order or jump in wherever your interest takes you. Each episode offers something to learn, whether you are starting at the beginning or joining us for a question that catches your attention.

Bring your questions.

You can simply listen, or keep a copy of the text beside you. Each episode page identifies the reading and gathers the main questions. You are welcome to pause, reread and return.
